Roulette Dozen Bet: How Dozens and Columns Work
Quick Summary
- A dozen bet covers 12 numbers: 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36.
- A column bet also covers 12 numbers, in a vertical line on the layout.
- Zero (and double zero on American wheels) loses on both bets.
- Check the wheel type; European and American wheels have different edges.

The dozen bet is one of roulette's outside bets. It covers a third of the numbers in a single chip, pays more than an even-money bet and wins about one spin in three. This independent guide explains dozens and columns, the sums behind their win rates and the difference zero makes. We are not run by KX8 and quote no table-specific payouts or limits, so read those on the live table you choose.
What a dozen covers
The layout divides the numbers one to 36 into three groups of twelve. The first dozen is 1 to 12, the second 13 to 24 and the third 25 to 36. You place a chip on the dozen box and win if the ball lands on any number in that group. The zero pocket belongs to none of the groups, and so a zero loses your dozen bet.
Columns are different groups
A column bet also covers twelve numbers, but they are spread down the layout rather than grouped in order.
Dozens are easier to read than columns when you are watching a result board, because the numbers 1 to 12 sit together. Columns need a glance at the layout, so a misplaced chip is likelier. Confirm where your chip sits before the window closes, because a misplaced bet is settled as placed.
- First column: 1, 4, 7 and so on up to 34.
- Second column: 2, 5, 8 and so on up to 35.
- Third column: 3, 6, 9 and so on up to 36.
Probability and the wheel
On a European wheel with 37 pockets, a dozen wins with probability 12/37, about 32.4%. On an American wheel with 38 pockets, the chance is 12/38, about 31.6%. The usual payout is 2 to 1, so a ৳100 chip returns ৳300 including your stake on a win. Expected return per ৳100 stake on the European wheel is (12/37 x 200) - (25/37 x 100) = about -৳2.70. On the American wheel the loss is about ৳5.26. Confirm which wheel is on the table.
Combining dozens
Some players cover two dozens to win about 65% of spins on a European wheel. The catch is that a win returns less than your total stake if the payout is 2 to 1, because you also lost the other chip. Two chips of ৳100 on two dozens win ৳100 net on a hit and lose ৳200 on a miss. The arithmetic does not remove the edge; it only changes the pattern of wins and losses.
A useful comparison is flat staking against a progression. If you double your dozen stake after each loss, a run of five misses at ৳100 would cost ৳100 + ৳200 + ৳400 + ৳800 + ৳1,600 = ৳3,100, and the next bet would need ৳3,200. Table maximums and your own budget end that plan long before probability catches up. Flat stakes are dull and predictable, which is their virtue.
Streaks and the dozen bet
After the ball lands in the same dozen three times, some players bet on the others, believing it is due. The wheel has no memory. See our roulette guide for the rest of the layout and the hot hand fallacy article for why streaks fool us. The live casino hub has other games.
Limits and table rules
Outside bets often have a higher minimum and a higher maximum than inside bets. Read the limits on the table information. Set your stake before you sit down, and leave when you reach your stop.
