Sic Bo is a three-dice game, and its big and small bets are the simplest on the layout. They look like a coin flip, but they are not, because of one rule: a triple kills both bets. This independent guide explains the rule and works through the count of outcomes, so you can see the edge in numbers. We are not run by KX8, and payouts at any live table should be read on the table itself.
What big and small mean
Three dice produce totals from 3 to 18. A small bet wins on totals of 4 to 10, and a big bet wins on 11 to 17. The totals of 3 and 18 fall outside both ranges. Most tables also say that if all three dice show the same number, both bets lose, regardless of the total. That triple rule is what makes the game unfair to the player.
Counting the outcomes
Three dice produce 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 equally likely outcomes. Ways to roll each total are 3:1, 4:3, 5:6, 6:10, 7:15, 8:21, 9:25, 10:27, 11:27, 12:25, 13:21, 14:15, 15:10, 16:6, 17:3, 18:1.
| Bet | Winning range | Raw ways | Minus triples | Final ways |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 4 to 10 | 107 | 2 (2-2-2, 3-3-3) | 105 |
| Big | 11 to 17 | 107 | 2 (4-4-4, 5-5-5) | 105 |
Turning counts into a chance
A final count of 105 winning outcomes out of 216 is 48.6%. The remaining 111 outcomes lose, which is 51.4%. At even money, a ৳100 stake returns ৳200 on a win, so the expected result per ৳100 is (105 x 100 - 111 x 100) / 216, which is about -৳2.78. That house edge of roughly 2.8% is the price of the triple rule, and it applies every round.
To feel the edge, imagine 216 rounds with a ৳100 big bet each time. You expect to win 105 rounds and lose 111, so you finish about ৳600 behind, a loss of ৳6 per round on average. Real sessions rarely match the average: you might finish ahead after 40 rounds and behind after 400. The longer you play, the closer the result tends to move toward the expected figure.
Why triples matter so much
There are six triples, each of probability 1/216. Two of them fall in the small range and two in the big range, which is why each bet loses 2 outcomes to triples. The other two triples, 1-1-1 and 6-6-6, would lose both bets anyway as their totals are outside the ranges. If a table paid on triples differently, the edge would change. Check the rules.
Comparing with other Sic Bo bets
Single-number and specific-total bets pay more but win less often, and their edges can be larger. Our Sic Bo guide covers the full layout. Compare the idea with dozen bets in roulette, where coverage and payout trade off in a similar way.
If you are comparing games, note that the roulette outside bets on a European wheel carry a lower edge of about 2.7%, and some baccarat bets carry less. Sic Bo big and small are close to those, but not better. Choosing between them is about pace and preference, not about finding an edge.
Streak thinking
After three bigs in a row some players move to small. The dice have no memory, and the odds are the same each round. The hot hand fallacy explains why runs look meaningful when they are not.
